Geelong Cats too good for Power at Adelaide Oval

Ben Jensen 21 April 2018, AFL Round 5 2018, Port Adelaide Power v Geelong Cats GEELONG celebrated Zach Tuohy’s 150th game defeating Port Adelaide on their own dungheap, the Adelaide Oval, this evening in an encounter marred by Lindsay Thomas’ crude bump of Scott Selwood which saw the latter taken from the ground, and later by a trespasser. The ‘Baby Catters’ held the Power to just seven goals including none in the final quarter, comprehensively defeating them in front of a home crowd of 45,372, who had the distinction of booing Scott Selwood as he was helped from the field and later his brother Joel as he accepted an award for best on ground.

Tom Hawkins was the late change with George Horlin-Smith coming in who delivered kicking two goals. Port Adelaide also had a late change with the villain Lindsay Thomas replacing Todd Marshall. James Parsons who was dropped after round three rewarded selectors’ faith like Horlin-Smith also kicking two goals. We missed most of the first half with parenting duties and missed the Thomas hit on Scott Selwood but saw the latter being taken off the field. We were impressed with most players, especially so the younger brigade particularly down back where we’re missing key talls at the moment, but you wouldn’t know it.

For good measure Thomas decked young Cat Jack Henry in the third quarter. Port kicked three goals in the third but the Cats went one better with four extending their lead from half time. The final term was a procession to be quite honest although the Cats only kicked four goals, the Power registering only three behinds. Horlin-Smith and Tuohy enjoyed the win, the former interviewed on the ground after the game, while Tuohy appeared on Channel Seven in the rooms speaking with Luke Darcy and Matthew Richardson afterwards.

Earlier the VFL and VFLW teams had wins over their Bulldog opponents – the women winning by a stunning 100 to 2, the blokes 87 to 68. Zach Guthrie and Horlin-Smith didn’t appear though it is not clear if both travelled to Adelaide or just Horlin-Smith. Next Saturday afternoon the Cats play Sydney at GMHBA Stadium, the match beginning at 1:45pm.
