Tom Hawkins suspended for making contact with AFL umpire, Cory Gregson cleared
Ben Jensen, 9 May 2018 TOM HAWKINS has been suspended for one week for making contact with an umpire (almost a slap if you like) in the big win over the GWS Giants last Friday night at GMHBA Stadium. Hawkins via the Cats’ team reached agreement with the AFL’s match review Tsar Michael Christian who in turn took counsel from SC Jeff Gleeson. The agreement was Hawkins would plead guilty on the understanding he would accept a one-match ban. One wonders how it all came to this but it seems no unreasonable.
Cat forward Cory Gregson the comeback kid also made contact with umpire Margetts immediately after Hawkins, refer the footage below, but that was presumably deemed acceptable as no charges were laid. Gregson placed his back on the umpire’s back, or possibly only brushing his shirt according to some observers, just as Margetts was giving Hawkins a telling off “don’t touch me either!”
The Cats play Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday at 3:20PM, the match to be broadcast on Channel Seven and Fox Footy. Gary Ablett looks set to return and Harry Taylor is also a chance to come back at some level. George Horlin-Smith who had a great game against Port Adelaide but was concussed the next week in the loss to Sydney should be fit but it’s a question of where he’d slot in. The VFL men play Collingwood also at Olympic Park over the way from the MCG at 11:30AM, and the VFL Women play also at Olympic Park at 2:30PM.
Cory Gregson what are you up to here? Obviously all aye OK as not charged. Tom Hawkins plea bargained will miss one week. #TheCattery #WeAreGeelong #AFL #AFLMRP pic.twitter.com/wLF32aZfve
