AFL ROUND 10 2018, GEELONG CATS V CARLTON BLUES
AFL ROUND 10 2018, GEELONG CATS V CARLTON BLUES, GMHBA STADIUM, SATURDAY 26 MAY 2018, 19:25 AEST
Ben Jensen, May 24 2018 GEELONG has swung the axe ahead of their match with Carlton, dropping four players- Zac Smith, George Horlin-Smith, James Parsons and Jackson Thurlow. The Blues have also somewhat swung the axe dropping three players and losing skipper Marc Murphy to injury. Coming in for the Cats are ruckmen Esava Ratugolea and Rhys Stanley, midfielder Brandan Parfitt, and debutant Jamaine Jones; more about them later. Carlton have brought in the Curnow brothers (Ed and Charlie), David Cuningham and Jacob Weitering. Unusually earlier today Scott said that Parfitt was ‘really close’ to resuming this week so don’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it and somebody like Horlin-Smith or maybe even Thurlow come back in.
CARLTON travel to Geelong for the first time in 21 years this Saturday night at GMHBA Stadium, which will also hopefully be Gary Ablett’s first game at home since returning from the Gold Coast in the off season. All three sides play at home, the VFL Women playing Carlton at 4:30PM and while the VFL men play Williamstown at 11AM.
As announced earlier today Jamaine Jones will make his AFL debut, the 19 year old who stands 180cm tall weighing a reported 81kg has been featuring in the VFL best players and goal kicking reports and been named as an emergency for the AFL side the last few weeks, the hard work paying off with coach Chris Scott confirming this morning he’ll get a shot at the big time. Scott also confirmed big man Esava Ratugolea will return after missing last match with ‘general soreness’, though he did train on Saturday morning (see our article here along with a few photo from the special training session featuring Lachie Henderson), Scott also commenting he considers Ratugolea a ‘genuine ruckman’.
For a good read on Jones please see this article from late 2016 in The Standard (a Warrnambool newspaper): https://www.standard.net.au/story/4280685/afl-draft-jones-a-big-part-of-the-family-photos-video/. Jones lived in Geelong before moving to Heywood (close to the SA Border, not far from Portland) in his mid teens, playing TAC Cup for what we used to call North Ballarat: now the Greater Western Victoria Rebels.
