Cats run out of steam against Tigers at MCG
Ben Jensen 17 June 2018, AFL Round 13 2018, Geelong Cats v Richmond Tigers Richmond defeated Geelong by three goals at the MCG today, the Cats putting in the effort but ultimately not quite good enough and lacking the polish to stay in front of the Tigers after leading for much of the game. The Cats finished the opening quarter in a canter, booting three goals to take a handy lead into quarter time. The Tigers did just about the opposite in the second to lead by two points at half time.
It was an arm wrestle in the third and for much of the fourth terms but the Tigers gradually wore the Cats down, kicking the first two of the final quarter making it tough. Geelong pulled one back but the Tigers answered with two more soon after and with the lead at around 20 points it was too tough for the Cats to come back. Tom Hawkins kicked three and had yet another after the final siren shot for a fourth but only managed a behind, to the classy boos from victorious Richmond supporters.
The Cats made their almost mandatory change before the match withdrawing Wylie Buzza replacing him with James Parsons, no word of an injury presumably due to the wintry conditions. In theory it meant they’d have a more mobile forward, in reality it meant Rhys Stanley had to take the ruck duties himself – which he did well in fact and for ours has now cemented the number one ruck spot. Lincoln McCarthy in his second AFL match injured his hamstring in the third quarter and didn’t come back on, putting his immediately future in serious doubt.
There was better news in the VFL and VFLW, both sides winning – the VFL Women’s team bettering Darebin at home on Saturday by 15 points, the men beating Port Melbourne at Williamstown on Saturday by 14 points cementing their spot in the top 4. The women’s side are undefeated, the men only losing three out of ten games so far.
