Geelong Cats break goal scoring record in massive win over Fremantle Dockers
Ben Jensen 18 August 2018, AFL Round 22 2018, Geelong Cats v Fremantle Dockers GEELONG annihilated the Fremantle Dockers at GMHBA Stadium today despite being outscored three goals to one in the first quarter. The Cats held the Dockers goalless for the rest of the match piling on ten in the second quarter when the heavens opened up delivering rain and hail; six in the third and finally seven in the final term. That made 23 goals in a row, which is a new AFL record, the previous was 16 set by Essendon in 2011 against Gold Coast. For good measure the 133 point margin is the biggest loss ever for Fremantle.
Gary Ablett kicked the four hundredth goal of his AFL career which was a highlight, Ablett named as one of the Cats’ best. Tom Hawkins kicked six goals and Tim Kelly was widely considered the Cats’ best, kicking three goals and had 26 disposals. Freo skipper Nat Fyfe, who had a chance to finally kick a goal for his beleaguered Dockers late in the final term but hit the post, had 37 possessions, the next best on the ground was former Docker Sam Menegola who had 27.
The win puts the Cats into the top eight and likely to play finals and after Collingwood beat Port Adelaide earlier today, in former Cat Travis Varcoe’s two hundredth game, Geelong sits in eighth spot equal on points with the Power but well ahead on percentage, the Cats on 125.7%, the Power 109.6%. Above the Cats on the ladder are Melbourne (130.5%) who play the Eagles in Perth tomorrow and GWS Giants at home in the final round. Sydney in sixth spot are a game ahead of the Cats and Demons but have an inferior percentage (109.7%) but have two games to play- GWS (on as we go to press) and a home match to the Hawks in the final round. A win in either will ensure the Cats can’t overtake them, and unless the Demons beat the Eagles stay ahead of Melbourne too.
The VFL Cats also had a big win, by 81 points over Coburg. The VFL Women’s side play away at Casey tomorrow at 1pm and will hope to extend their winning run.
