Cats’ season Dee-stroyed in front of massive crowd at MCG

Ben Jensen 8 September 2018, AFL Elimination Final 2 2018, Melbourne Demons v Geelong Cats GEELONG’s season is over after losing to fifth placed Melbourne at the MCG last night. Another MCG final, another goalless first quarter by the Cats put them at a tremendous disadvantage, the Demons kicking five goals to the Cats’ none in the first term. The Cats held the Dees goalless in the second but could only manage two themselves – Melbourne though did score six behinds and were fairly inaccurate all night. The third quarter was a tie but the Demons opened up the match in the final quarter booting four goals to three – two of the Cats’ goals coming after the match was clearly over.

The match was watched by just under 92,000 people, a massive crowd by anyone’s standards, particularly so for week one of the finals series. The Demons hadn’t played a final in 13 years, the last final at the same venue also against the Cats – Geelong winning by just under 10 goals on that occasion – see the match report. The VFL sides both play their do or die finals on Sunday at Port Melbourne, the women against the NT Thunder and men against Box Hill.
