Cats beat Hawks in Easter Monday MCG clash
GEELONG beat Hawthorn by 23 points in front of 66,347 people at the MCG today, the Cats leading at every change but the Hawks never gave up, pulling the Cats’ lead back to just 16 points with around ten minutes to go.
Hawthorn dominated much of the first term but the Cats kicked the final two goals of the quarter including one after the siren to Gary Rohan, to lead by a solitary behind at quarter time. Rohan kicked two goals for the term and four in the match. The Cats outscored the Hawks six goals to three in the second quarter, another Gary kicking two goals, Ablett this time.
By this stage our household was hoping to emulate Carlton yesterday and win all four quarters, but it was not quite to be for the Cats. Five goals to three in the so-called ‘premiership quarter’ made it the first three, the Cats leading by 30 points or five goals at three quarter time. Patrick Dangerfield kicked the first goal of the final quarter to push the Cats’ margin to 36 points but the Hawks would kick the next three, the margin inside three goals with ten minutes to go.
The Cats held out though, Tom Hawkins kicking his only goal of the match to seal the win with around five minutes to go.
Next the Cats play West Coast at GMHBA Stadium – 4:40PM on Sunday. The Hawks also play on Sunday in a ‘home’ match in Tasmania against Carlton.
