Cats win Mother’s Day clash over Kangaroos
GEELONG COACH CHRIS SCOTT won the Mother’s Day battle over brother Brad at Marvel Stadium today, his Geelong side getting the better of North Melbourne by 23 points. The Cats made two changes before a ball was bounced; Sam Menegola a late change replaced by skipper Joel Selwood in an uncharacteristic role as an emergency. But Selwood didn’t make it onto the field, replaced by other emergency Charlie Constable not long before the first bounce.
It was an entertaining match despite the very small turn out at Marvel; due to a combination of it being Mother’s Day plus it was a Kangaroos home game, the Roos having a very small membership and fan base. Patrick Dangerfield kicked the opening goal of the match as we were taking out seats up on level 3; the Kangaroos actually had the run of the play for the next ten or so minutes but the Cats’ three goals in what we used to call ‘time on’ saw them seven points in front at quarter time.
It was a day of multiple goal kickers; Ben Brown top scoring with five; Gary Ablett and Tom Hawkins had four each; Tim Kelly and Jordan Clark two. Kelly was BOG with Ablett just behind him. Ablett was ‘booed’ mercilessly by the Kangaroo fans present which was louder than you’d think – but the Cats fans answered back in kind. In the end when he slotted his third and fourth to seal the game they’d given up.
The Roos peppered the goals but the accuracy wasn’t there, the Cats either kicking more or equal goals each quarter. In the third and fourth terms it looked like the Kangaroos were right back in it but both times a volley of goals by the Cats snuffed the challenge out.
Gary Rohan was taken from the field in the third quarter clearly concussed (see video below) and has to be in serious doubt to play next week. Tom Stewart was likewise helped off in the same quarter but returned, diagnosed with merely a sore neck. Tom Atkins had a hamstring complaint and hobbled all match and may also miss the match with the Bulldogs next Saturday at GMHBA Stadium.

The Cats lost both other games on the day – the VFL men & women going down to North Melbourne and Melbourne University respectively. University’s win over the Cats was quite convincing by 44 points while the VFL men led for much of the match but the Kangaroos’ six goals to two final quarter saw them lose by 20 points.
Next Saturday Geelong host the in-form Western Bulldogs, the match time of 4:35PM sure to make it a chilly one. The VFL men play Collingwood on Sunday also at GMHBA Stadium while the women play a home match in Colac against Essendon.
