Cats hamstrung by loss of skipper, fail to fire against Magpies

AFL 2020 round 7; Optus Stadium, Monday 20 July 2020 Ben Jensen GEELONG lost two players to injury and the match to Collingwood at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Thursday night. The game started ominously with returning Magpie Jordan De Goey awarded a mark in front of goal that he didn’t hold, and it went downhill from there. The Cats were no match for the Magpies even more so after losing skipper Joel Selwood to a hamstring injury towards the end of the first quarter. Jordan Clark joined his skipper on the injury list with what may be a serious shoulder injury, the WA local playing just his second match of the season.

The 44-point loss put a dampener on the Cats’ last month, ending a three-match winning streak. The Cats must sit tight now with their next match not until Monday 27 July against the Dockers. They will be without Selwood, Clark, and now Gary Ablett who has returned home to his young family. The Cats will then play the Eagles in round 9, at a date and time yet to be announced by the AFL. Like most if not all Victorian clubs the Cats will then head to Queensland as part of the Coronavirus/Covid-19 ‘hub’.
