CATS' OFF SEASON TRANSFORMATION CONTINUES; POACH SANDO FROM PORT ADELAIDE
Ben Jensen 2 November 2006

By Ben Jensen BRENTON SANDERSON, who played 199 games for the Cats between 1995 and 2004 has sensationally walked out on Port Adelaide to return to Geelong. Sanderson, 32, who retired from football following the 2004 season, held a development coach role at the Power, but the no-nonsense defender will replace dumped Andy Lovell as Geelong's midfield coach.

But the Power aren't happy. Power CEO John James articulated the following: "Brenton was contracted to the club for 2007 so we’re extremely disappointed he has decided to break that contract and return to Melbourne".

Cats CEO Brian Cook denied the appointment was another example of nepotism, with better credentialed candidates overlooked. "We interviewed 12 candidates that applied for this role with the goal of finding the best person to join our coaching staff".

"Brenton's application and presentation was first class and his philosophy in terms of where we need to improve was insightful. Brenton was a highly respected player throughout his career and we believe he will quickly earn that same level of respect as a coach.”
