Cats overcome tropical heat, Lions GEELONG may have surprised much of the football world in defeating the Brisbane Lions in Cairns on Saturday night, but smart punters from around the nation cashed in. A betting 'plunge' saw the Cats fall from $2.55 to $1.65 in the day of the match. The Lions led by 37 points at half time, but could only manage a solitary goal, deep into timeon in the third term, while the Cats piled on another seven goals to win by eight points. In a scrappy affair played before approximately 10,000 the match was notable for the extremely low number of marks taken. Geelong Coach Mark Thompson's tactic of training in longsleeved jumpers during the week appears to have conditioned the Cats well, the young brigade outshining the Lions spectacularly in the second term.. The Best for Geelong were usual suspects Corey Enright, Joel Corey, comeback kid David Spriggs, one-time wild child Cameron Mooney and second year forward Steve Johnson. Mooney, Johnson and 2002 leading goalkicker Kent Kingsley all kicked two goals each, while Spriggs and Corey Enright each kicking a Niner. Former skipper Ben Graham performed admirably in defense, equalling the top number of possessions with 17 (14 kicks, 3 handballs) and fellow defender, 2001 best and fairest winner Brenton Sanderson, continued his return to form (8 kicks, 8 marks). The Cats now face Collingwood, who Geelong have had the wood over for the past few years, the Pies not beating Geelong since round 15, 1998. Collingwood Captain Nathan Buckley will no doubt be overjoyed to hear the news that Geelong tagger Cameron Ling (pictured) will not take any part in the match; Buckley being named "Ling's Bitch" the past couple of seasons.
