CATS LOOKING TO CONTINUE HAWKIWOBBLES
OVER HAWKS By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery AFL 2013 ROUND 15; GEELONG CATS V HAWTHORN HAWKS GEELONG takes an unchanged lineup into their clash with Hawthorn at the MCG tonight as they seek to make it eleven wins in a row over the Hawks since the 2008 Grand Final in what is dubbed the 'Kennett Curse'. Since that time the Cats have had the wood over the Hawks including round one of this season and the 2011 Qualifying Final on their way to the 2011 Premiership. Since former Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett made his infamously arrogant remarks on the AFL's Offsiders program on the eve of the 2009 season (in which the Cats won the Premiership of course) Hawthorn has not won a single game over Geelong despite coming close. The closest they came was round 19 in 2012 when they led by four points when the siren sounded. Famously Tom Hawkins won the match off his own boot, slamming home the goal from outside fifty to the joy of his teammates, Geelong fans and pretty much everybody who voted Kennett out in 1998. Although one of the more anticipated matches of each season now the game won't be telecast on free to air TV in South Australia or Western Australia, those states telecasting the Crows and the Eagles instead, similarly no radio coverage in either state. So spare a thought for those Geelong fans without Foxtel. The Cats are still missing Paul Chapman and Travis Varcoe through injury and Steve Johnson to suspension but fortunately Varcoe returns to the VFL this morning along with Trent West. Varcoe was taken off the long term injury list today, as a consequence Josh Walker goes back to the Rookie list. Jared Rivers and Josh Cowan also come back from injury via the VFL this Saturday morning at Simonds Stadium. The Hawks have made three changes recalling Cyril Rioli who has been out with a long term hamstring injury, ruckman Max Bailey and zippy forward Paul Puopolo. The Cats hope to continue the 'Hawkiwobbles' for at least another match and hopefully for the rest of the season.
