SAINTS WIN FIRST BLOOD By Ben Jensen (from Leipzig, Germanz)AFL 2009 ROUND 14 ST KILDA SAINTS V GEELONG CATS ST KILDA have won the first major battle over Geelong for 2009, winning by one goal over a fast finishing Geelong side who levelled scores after being 23 points down with just minutes to spare. Former Eagle Michael Gardiner was the hero for the Saints, marking with just over a minute to go and converting to give his new side the four points and outright top spot on the ladder, and much needed confidence over the Cats. St Kilda led by as much as five goals at one point, the Cats never holding the ascendency. Geelong key backman Harry Taylor suffered a major injury in the huge pack that proceeded Gardinerīs mark and winning goal, being knocked unconcious. Darren Milburn injured an ankle while Steve Johnson, a late withdrawl, may again miss with a hip injury.
