CATS HOP AWAY FROM KANGAROOS FOR FIFTEENTH
WIN By Ben Jensen AFL ROUND 20 2007, KANGAROOS V GEELONG CATS GEELONG survived indifferent second quarter form and a late comeback by the Kangaroos to record a twenty-seven point win in front of a packed crowd of 48,501 at Telstra Dome this afternoon. The fifteenth win in a row is second only to Geelong's twenty-three straight in 1952-53, and they're not finished yet. Best on ground was Gary Ablett, who contributed throughout the game including the vital third term and snuffing out the Kangaroos' comeback in the last quarter. Jimmy Bartel wasn't far behind and skipper Tom Harley also stood strong. Cameron Mooney was the livewire up forward and found his kicking boots, with five goals, and midfielder Cameron Ling was back to near his best after a quiet one against Adelaide.

The Cats outscored the Kangaroos five goals to two in the opening term, thanks mostly to Cameron Mooney's three goals. That work almost came unstuck in the second quarter, the Nomadic Kangaroos kicking two goals two behinds to a wasteful Geelong's one goal four.
After Shannon Grant kicked the opening goal of the second half it looked as though the Cats had their work cut out. Until, thanks for brilliant midfield and forward play led by Gary Ablett, Steve Johnson, Mooney and Joel Corey they piled on six unanswered goals. The Cats outscored the Roos by seven goals to three in the quarter, for what looked like a match winning thirty-seven point lead at the final break. Cameron Mooney kicked his fifth goal two minutes into the final term, to make the Cats' buffer fourty-three points. The Roos answered back within a minute thanks to a dreadful chain of free kicks and undeserved fifty metre penalty, but Geelong answered back the next minute with Paul Chapman's first goal. The Kangaroos made a game of it though, mind you they had plenty of help from indifferent play by the Cats and puzzling umpiring interpretations at their end. The result was five unanswered goals, and a margin cut down to just seventeen points. Geelong though, like the family cat playing with a mouse before devouring it, kicked back into gear in the final two minutes of the match. Paul Chapman kicked his second goal while Cameron Mooney gifted another to Jimmy Bartel. Geelong certainly deserved the win after stepping up when required and seeing off the Kangaroos' challenge. However the mistakes and costly turnovers may have cost them the game had the late charge in the third quarter not occurred. Next Sunday Geelong play Port Adelaide. Selection meetings will again be feisty, with Mark Blake, Charlie Gardiner, Kane Tenace and maybe even Henry Playfair pressing for a recall. In other good news Max Rooke is expected to resume in the VFL next week, after his troubles with a hamstring injury this season. Rooke recently flew to Germany, to seek radical treatment by German Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfarth.
VFL ROUND NINETEEN 2007 - WERRIBEE V GEELONG - CATS BANK DOUBLE CHANCE IN THE VFL the Bendigo Bank Cats thrashed Western Bulldogs affiliated Werribee, almost doubling their score. The sixty-nine point win was Geelong's fourth in a row and thirteenth from the season. Second on the ladder to Sandringham, the Cats face the Bendigo Bombers next Sunday in the VFL's final round before the finals series commences. The win secured second spot for the Cats, entitling the Cats to a double chance, but not a home final.
