Geelong names team for Wizard Cup opener GEELONG have named a side near full strength for Sunday's opening Wizard Cup match against the Western Bulldogs at Skilled Stadium. Steven King will lead the side for the first time while former captain Ben Graham will start in the backline, unlike the corresponding match in 2002 at the same venue, when Graham booted 6 goals against the Tigers. Geelong's team is minus regular senior player but much maligned (taking
after Big Menschy) David
Clarke and wonderkid James Bartel, but talented youngster Gary Ablett
has been named in the side. No new players have been named in the squad
of 28. Match Preview Geelong FC management has asked the AFL to reconsider their decision to not grant club members (including Geelong's) to entry at one pre-season cup game. CEO Brian Cook told Sport 927 "Personally and from our clubs point of view, were disappointed and I hope that the powers that be have a look at this over the next year or two." Geelong supporters should note that the Preseason version of the AFL Record, available at most Newsagents for only $5.50 contains a coupon giving the bearer free entry into any Round 1, 2 or 3 Wizard Cup game. This author thinks that this is a great deal, as not only do you get the record and free entry, but also a 160-page booklet 'AFL Season Preview' featuring profiles & stats of each AFL player at every club. |
