AFL ROUND 12 2006: FREMANTLE V GEELONG;
150TH GAMES FOR MARK THOMPSON AND MATTHEW SCARLETT; MATCH PREVIEW AND
TEAM LIST By Ben Jensen GEELONG CAPTAIN STEVEN KING returns from injury this week, for vice captain Matthew Scarlett and coach Mark 'Bomber' Thompson's 150th games playing and coaching for the club. Also joining the side is Kane Tenace, who replaces the injured Steve Johnson while Mark Blake makes way for King. Both Thompson and Scarlett are taking the milestone in their stride, Thompson in particular playing down the achievement. No (the 150th game does not mean) a great deal, (its) just another game we want to win. King, who has only played five matches in 2006 and last played in round eight, faces an enormous challenge of trying to curb inform Docker giant Aaron Sandilands' dominance. Jimmy Bartel, who was cleared by the tribunal will play a key role as will nifty forwards Gary Ablett and Paul Chapman, on the big Subiaco ground. On Geelong's emergency list are Mark Blake, Tom Lonergan and Nick Batchelor. Tom Harley remains absent as does defender David Johnson. For the Dockers, Robert Haddrill, Ryan Crowley and Troy Cook join the side of injured trio Graham Polak (groin), Antoni Grover (shoulder) and Daniel Gilmore (knee). Back-up Fremantle ruckman Justin Longmuir remains in doubt with a knee injury. The last time Geelong won against Fremantle in Perth was back in round eight of 2001. TIP? FREMANTLE BY 11 POINTS (NO DOUBT ASSISTED BY 'HOME TOWN' DECISIONS OF THE KIND THAT RUINED CARLTON'S UPSET OVER WEST COAST LAST WEEKEND)

LAST TIME ROUND 10 2005 GEELONG: 3.5, 7.8, 9.11,
11.16 (82) DEFEATED BY GOALS GEELONG: Kingsley 2, Chapman
2, Mackie, Ottens, Lonergan, Playfair, Ablett, Scarlett, Milburn FREMANTLE:
Farmer 4, Crowley 3, McPharlin 2, Sandilands 2, Longmuir, Black, Pavlich GEELONG went down to the Fremantle Dockers by nine points in an unprofessional display in Cameron Ling's 100th game. The Dockers were deserved winners but didn't win any fans with their go-slow tactics in the final quarter. The Cats had several chances to kick the winning goal in the final minutes, but in the end Fremantle's Matthew Pavlich put the icing on the cake, kicking a goal after the final siren to give his team a much needed nine point win. Geelong trailed by inside two goals at quarter time after kicking three late goals, and lead by three points at half time after an improved second quarter. But both quarters were marred by terrible field kicking and shots at goal. Geelong were goalless until into time on in the first term.
Despite the Cats getting off to a good start after half time to extend their lead to nine points, Fremantle dominated the second half of the third quarter to build a ten point lead at the final change. In the final quarter Geelong could only manage two goals yet also kicked five behinds. In contrast, the Dockers finished with three straight, one coming after the final siren and another kicked by Jeffrey Farmer, who literally made something out of nothing. The locals were not happy with umpiring but never are when the team's being beaten. The most puzzling of decisions was in the last thirty seconds - Fremantle's ruckman won possession and blatantly dribbled the ball over the boundary line from fifteen metres out - no free kick. As it was the Cats already had opportunities up forward and missed, so it probably didn't effect the result. |
