AFL ROUND 14 2006: CARLTON V GEELONG;
SELECTORS WIELD AXE - KINGSLEY PAYS PRICE; 50 GAMES FOR JOHNSON; MATCH
PREVIEW AND TEAM LIST By Ben Jensen GEELONG selectors have reacted savagely and sensibly to the fifteen goal loss to the Adelaide Crows last weekend, dropping four players including senior players Kent Kingsley and James Kelly. Also dropped from the side to face Carlton are defender Tim Callan and forward Nathan Ablett. In the VFL the Bendigo Bank Cats host the Box Hill Hawks at Skilled Stadium. Coming into the side is David Johnson, who will finally play his 50th game, having played his 49th game way back in round eight against Collingwood. Also rejoining the side is forward Andrew Mackie, who last played in the round eleven win over Essendon at Telstra Dome. This will be only Mackie's 30th AFL game since being drafted in 2002 and making his debut in 2004. This season Mackie has a return of five goals from six matches, and a return of twenty-three goals from twenty-nine matches overall. Matthew McCarthy's work in the VFL has finally been rewarded. McCarthy has only played one game the past two seasons, and that in that one game last season he didn't even make it to quarter time, suffering a recurrence of a shoulder injury that also ruined his 2004 season. McCarthy, in the style of 'Richo' at Richmond, is a strong marking player who often gets the yips when kicking for goal. He deserves a chance and should be welcomed to the side with open arms! Brent Prismall, who broke his hand in his debut game back in round five against reigning premiers Sydney Swans, returns in Kelly's place. Carlton struggled last weekend but was unlucky not to win their previous two matches against the Kangaroos and the West Coast Eagles and are due for a win.

LAST TIME ROUND 8 2005, TELSTRA DOME GARY ABLETT pressed his claims for All Australian selection with an awesome display in Geelong's demolition of Carlton last Friday night at the Telstra Dome. Just under forty-six thousand mainly Carlton fans witnessed what was a contest for a time during the second quarter, but ultimately proved to be a whitewash, with Geelong winning by seventy points. Gary Ablett, along with Brad Ottens, kicked two goals in the first quarter, helping his team to a twenty-eight point lead. Carlton could only manage five behinds. However Carlton did come back in the second quarter, but ultimately didn't make up enough ground, Geelong leading by nineteen points at half time. In the second half Geelong would kick twelve goals to just four, the Blues barely putting up a whimper. Ablett finished with four goals, Ottens three, and last week's debutante, Cameron Thurley, an astonishing four goals. Darren Milburn, playing his 150th game, had another night out at the Dome. Milburn and midfielder Joel Corey would just about be level in the club best and fairest up until this point. After last week's bag of three, Milburn kicked another two goals. Henry Playfair, who's had a quiet few weeks, was back to the best we've seen so far this season. Matthew Scarlett had a great game but was forced from the field for a quarter, appearing to injure a knee, but should be right for this Sunday.
GEELONG: 6.3, 10.5, 15.9,
22.11 (143) DEFEATED GOALS |
