AFL ROUND 17 2006: KANGAROOS V GEELONG;
MOONEY IN FOR PLAYFAIR - RICCARDI STILL ON OUTER; CATS HOPE TO SPOIL
KANGAROOS' CANBERRA FAREWELL; MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM LIST By Ben Jensen THE BIG HAIRY CAT CAMERON MOONEY will return this Sunday, replacing Henry Playfair who lasted just one week back in the AFL side. But veteran Peter Riccardi remains on the, once more left out for the younger brigade. The Kangaroos go into the match with an unchanged lineup to the side that lost to premiership favorite Adelaide Crows last Friday night at AAMI Stadium. GEELONG travel to Canberra to face the Kangaroos final home game at Manuka Oval. The Roos, who lost part of the facilities in a suspicious fire early on Saturday morning, should be fired up for their farewell to our nation's capital. While the team formerly known as North Melbourne fights for pride, Geelong is fighting to make the finals. The Cats are now just one game outside the eight behind Fremantle, who play Carlton at Telstra Dome. Cameron Mooney should return straight into the AFL side, and will replace one of Henry Playfair or Matt McCarthy. Both were ordinary last week, but at least McCarthy managed one goal and commanded the attention of quality opponents. Also waiting in the wings is veteran Peter Riccardi, who is surely playing his final season, having spent most of it either injured or in the VFL. But with no VFL action last round, it makes Riccardi and others like Kane Tenace, Brent Prismall's task that little bit more difficult. The match is being broadcast live by Channel Nine in Victoria. Predictably, the match is receiving virtually no radio coverage, but surprisingly no coverage in Canberra where the game is being played. KRock are the only station to cover the match. For those not fortunate enough to live in or near Geelong, you can at least listen to the commentary from gfc.com.au during the game.

GEELONG OUTCLASSED a determined but ultimately disappointing Kangaroos side at Skilled Stadium yesterday, running out sixty-nine point winners in AFL Round Two. For the Cats Kent Kingsley bagged a career-best eight goals, while Gary Ablett Junior chipped in with four. Once again the crowd seemed low, 22,839, but it is difficult to comprehend many people could actually fit inside the stadium. The Geelong Football Club is working on plans for expansion in the near future, after concentrating on creature comforts the past ten years at the expense of actual capacity. With record membership and good form on the field, it is likely expansion will come sooner rather than later. Shannon Byrnes, the pint-sized midfielder who burst out of the blocks this season, was a late withdrawal prior to the first bounce, and was replaced by Andrew Mackie. Mackie certainly took advantage of his good fortune, kicking two goals and more importantly playing one of his best matches for the club. Kingsley missed his first shot at goal but after that kicked eight; he was rested briefly during each quarter and lead very well from the square, and even dished a couple goals off. Fellow returnee Steve Johnson, who was positively champing at the bit to play, was impressive, and combined well with partner in crime Mackie. Geelong lead by just four goals at half time after letting the 'Roos back into the game for most of the second quarter. But after a half-time 'rev up' from both the coaching and playing groups, the Cats never let the Kangaroos back into the match. What followed was a seven goal to nil third quarter and four to three final term. The only negative from the game has been unwanted attention on full back Matthew Scarlett, who was involved in several clashes with Kangaroo goalsneak Leigh Harding. |
