AFL ROUND 3 2007 'RIVALRY ROUND': MELBOURNE V GEELONG;
CATS FINALISE TEAM; MATCH PREVIEW AND FINAL TEAM LIST
PLUS TV / RADIO BROADCAST DETAILS By Ben Jensen GEELONG, fresh from spanking Carlton into submission last Saturday night at Telstra Dome, face a hapless, depleted Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday in this Round Three, 'Rivalry Round' fixture. James Kelly returns from suspension but former Captain Steven King finds himself lining up in the VFL (VFL TEAM LISTS). David Johnson, who like Adolf Hitler's unfortunate parents was a late withdrawal last week with a shoulder injury, faces a fitness test and was named on an expanded interchange, as was Kane Tenace. James Kelly has been rushed straight back into the starting eighteen after serving a two match suspension whilst Charlie Gardiner and Joel Selwood were ommited after being named in the initial squad of 25.
IN: D.Johnson, Tenace, Kelly
Melbourne Captain David Neitz and fellow forward Russell Robertson will not play, both injuring their knees during their loss to Hawthorn on Monday. Young gun, former Leopold junior Clint Bartram will also miss through knee injury. None of the trio will miss the entire season but may be out for up to six weeks each. The Demons have recalled former Geelong forward Clint Bizzell, out of favour midfielder and now holder of the second most games played in a row at Melbourne, Adem Yze, tall Paul Johnson, Ryan Ferguson, 18 year old forward Ricky Petterd and veteran lumbering defender Ben Holland
The Cats, albeit on a winning 'streak' of one, are on fire after last weekend and will bring that same form and belief into this match. The Demons, on the other hand, are stuffed. Melbourne will simply not be able to match Geelong's firepower up forward. The Cats should kick at LEAST fifteen goals whilst the Demons will struggle to break double figures. The Demons defence will be stretched by the likes of the Ablett brothers, Cameron Mooney, Tom Hawkins, Brad Ottens and even small forward Paul Chapman.
WHY WE WON'T WIN (THE SKEPTIC'S VIEW) MELBOURNE have been a bogey side the past few seasons. In this great game of ours you can't get a more dangerous game than Geelong has this week, against the wounded Melbourne. In the corresponding Round Three fixture last season the Cats, seemingly flying high after thrashings of Brisbane and the Kangaroos, were overan by the Demons on a wet Friday night fixture.
WEATHER Showers early - about 1mm for entire day. Scattered Clouds. Mild.

LAST TIME ROUND 21 2006, SKILLED STADIUM GEELONG: 2.1 5.4 11.5 14.10 (94) DREW WITH
GEELONG AND MELBOURNE football clubs fought out a draw at Skilled Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Cats did well to fight back after an awful first half whilst the Demons can kiss goodbye any chance of doing well in September. Peter Riccardi made his final farewell to his fans and teammates with a well deserved lap of honour. But the big story is young defender Tom Lonergan, who Sunday morning had a kidney removed and remains in intensive care. Melbourne lead at half time by five goals, and looked to be running off with the game and Geelong's season eleven minutes into the final term when they kicked their twelfth goal of the match to Geelong's six. But the Cats didn't lie down, with the Ablett brothers, Steve Johnson, Matthew Scarlett and indeed most of the team knuckling down and slashing the margin to just nine points at the final change. But, it ultimately wasn't to be. Matthew Scarlett's desperate snap at goal in the final few seconds was spilled by Demon defender Matthew Carroll. Jimmy Bartel pounced and despite his efforts to rush a behind, the siren sounded just as he gained possession. No siren-gate this time around, just a lot of stunned faces on both sides as they made their way from the field. |
