AFL ROUND 18 2007: GEELONG V RICHMOND; MATCH PREVIEW PLUS TV / RADIO BROADCAST DETAILS; CATS RECALL KING
Ben Jensen 2 August 2007

By Ben Jensen GEELONG CATS V RICHMOND TIGERS GEELONG host Richmond at Skilled Stadium this Saturday, chasing their thirteenth win in a row. Last time these two sides met Geelong broke a few records on their way to a massive score of 35.12 (222). Brad Ottens faces his old side, against which he has a good record, while for Richmond 'local' boy Nathan Foley tries to win the AFL NAB Rising Star award from Geelong's gem of a draftee in Joel Selwood.

Rejoining the side is former skipper Steven King, who replaces Corey Enright who is being rested due to shoulder soreness. Paul Chapman remains on the injury list.

The match is yet another Fox Sports (Foxtel, Austar, Optus) only game. Expect the crowd to be packed to the rafters.

Geelong's score of 222 points (35 goals, 12 behinds) is the ninth highest all time score. Geelong holds the AFL/VFL record, with 37.17 (239) against the then Robert Walls coached Brisbane Bears in round 7 1992. It is the first time any team has scored more than 200 points since 1995 (some would say it is the highest score this century).

FOUR players kicked four goals (Paul Chapman, Nathan Ablett, Tom Hawkins and back pocket Andrew Mackie), and three players three (Travis Varcoe, Gary Ablett and Cameron Ling. Seven other goalkickers kicked two or less, a total of fifteen in all. Hawkins' first three goals all came in the third quarter after spending much of the first half on the bench; the fourth was the icing on the cake.

SKILLED STADIUM

The Bendigo Bank Cats overcame a three goal deficit at three quarter time to win by ten points, over Richmond affiliate Coburg as a curtain raiser to the AFL game. Tom Lonergan continued his good form with five goals, and is a good chance to come into the AFL side to replace captain Steven King.

Next Sunday the Cats play in a traditional Sunday game, against winless and newly-standalone club, Port Melbourne, at their TEAC Oval.
