CATS RUN ON TO
VICTORY OVER BLUES BY 42 POINTS GEELONG defeated CARLTON by fourty-two points at Etihad Stadium tonight. At three-quarter time the match remaineds delicately poised, the Cats remaining in front by twenty-five points. Geelong led Carlton by twenty-two points at half-time, though they led by over thirty mid-way through the second quarter. It was just one point in favour of the Cats at quarter time, they got going early to establish a decent lead before the Blues pegged a couple back. Carlton were out of the gates after half time but could only kick one goal at a time; they scored first but the Cats answered back, twice, before scoring consecutive goals to extend their half-time lead. Similarly in the final term, Carlton opened up the goal-scoring but the Cats answered back, this time immediately. Gary Ablett, goalless at half-time, had kicked three crucial goals by the twelve-minute mark to give his side a buffer when it counted. Dan Menzel kicked his third with twenty-four minutes gone, staking his claim to a spot come September. Ablett added his fourth not long after, thanks to a Menzel pass, his fortieth for the season.
