AFL 2011, ROUND 17, SUNDAY 17 JULY 2011 14:10 AEST, GABBA BRISBANE CATS TESTED BUT RUN OUT FIVE GOAL
WINNERS OVER LIONS By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery BRISBANE LIONS V GEELONG CATS GEELONG struggled to overcome the Brisbane Lions in the first three quarters at the Gabba this afternoon, but ended up winning by 31 points as James Podsiadly kicked 8 goals. Lions captain Jonathan Brown had a scare after being again hospitalised after a heavy head-high clash with a teammate in the third quarter but was later cleared of serious injury. Although a Brisbane game, Channel Seven insisted on showing the game on delay and on their SD channel, infuriating Cats fans, tens of who vowed to not watch the channel the rest of the evening. Matthew Scarlett was a late change for Geelong with
Trent West coming into the side. Although the Cats were ahead at half
time and trailed by just 3 points at the final break, the Lions had
most of the answers until this point, generally being a goal or two
ahead. Brown went down in the third quarter and although the Lions then
snatched back the lead, from then on Geelong had the run of play, kicking
seven goals in the final quarter. Tom Hawkins ended up with 4 goals,
kicking a couple in a row while the J-Pod did likewise, ending with
his career-best tally of 8.
