AFL 2016 ROUND 11: GEELONG CATS V
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS; MATCH PREVIEW & FINAL TEAMS AFL ROUND 11 2016: GEELONG CATS V GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS THE CATS have dropped three players from the side who lost to Carlton last weekend to face the Greater Western Sydney Giants who beat the Cats back in round 2. The list of exclusions does not include Tom Ruggles who allegedly did a Gary Sidebottom and missed the match against the Blues, initially arriving at the MCG according to the 3AW Rumour File. Billie Smedts, Jordan Murdoch and Cory Gregson were initially the omittees but with Rhys Stanley being withdrawn from the side on Friday, Murdoch gets another chance. Into the side are Lincoln McCarthy, Daniel Menzel and Ruggles. McCarthy is a good in, he has been in good form this season as has Dan Menzel who had a week off. GWS has made two changes, Phil Davis the big in. Big news in the VFL, with Mitch Clark and Sam Menegola returning from injury for their first games of the season.
UMPIRES FIELD: Nicholls, Hay, Jeffery EMERGENCY: Brown BOUNDARY: Tomkins, Marantelli, Tee, Jenkinson GOAL: Wilson, Dixon EMERGENCY: Lai TIP: Cats by 17 points MATCH PREVIEW by Willem van Denderen Geelong will look to bounce back on their home deck following a horror fortnight which saw losses to Collingwood and Carlton. The back-to-back defeats have seen the Cats fall two games behind ladder-leaders North Melbourne, and perhaps most worryingly they now sit in a group of five sides on 28 points. One of these sides is this week's opponent in Greater Western Sydney, a team delivering on their long-recognised promise so far in 2016. Geelong and the Giants have already met this season, the Giants prevailing by 13 points in Canberra in round two. The task will be tougher at the second time of asking for the Western Sydney given the Cats are yet to lose at home this season, however the dispirited performances of the past two weeks will give the Giants a great deal of optimism. A win for the Cats will see them remain ahead of the pack and within touch of the top two; a loss and they could very likely drop as far down as sixth. The game will see the return of triple-premiership hero Steve Johnson to Kardinia Park, in what is expected to be a warm reception for the former Cat. Johnson has been rejuvenated this season playing primarily as a forward, and Geelong fans can expect to be treated to one last show from Stevie J, even if it is in orange. THIS WEEK IN
FOCUS: Round eleven shapes as a crucial clash for the Cats, whose
lacklustre past fortnight has put them in danger of losing the advantage
gained in the opening months. Slow starts have cost the side dearly,
having conceded 16 and 14 goals to Collingwood and Carlton respectively
in the first half of the last two weeks. These early deficits have proved
too much to overcome, so it is imperative Geelong tighten up defensively
from the outset against the Giants. The Cats must also ensure they put
away their early chances, for their combined first quarter scores of
3.9 (from two matches) have been just as detrimental to the cause as
the defence. TEAM NEWS:
Geelong continue to rotate a pool of players with three changes made
this week. Lincoln McCarthy returns having recovered from an ankle injury
sustained against West Coast, as does fellow forward Daniel Menzel.
Tom Ruggles has also been recalled for his 7th game of his debut season.
Rhys Stanley was named in the side on Thursday night but has not overcome
a foot complaint, so Jordan Murdoch has retained his spot. Also going
out are the omitted Cory Gregson and Billie Smedts. PREDICTION: It should be a fantastic game on Saturday evening, with the result of extreme significance to the make up of the top eight heading into the middle of the season. At their best, both sides play exciting, high-scoring football. If the Cats can find the commitment that has been lacking recently and the Giants acclimatise well to the ground, there will be very little to split the two sides. The home ground advantage nudges the clash in Geelong's favour. Geelong by 6 points.

AFL 2016 ROUND 2 GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS SUNDAY 3 APRIL 2016 13:10 AEST MANUKA OVAL 4 APRIL 2016 CATS LOSE TO GIANTS 1 APRIL 2016 AFL 2016 ROUND 2: GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS MATCH PREVIEW & FINAL TEAMS CATS LOSE TO GIANTS AFL ROUND 2 2016: GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS THE CATS crashed back down to earth on Sunday, losing to the Giants at Canberra's Manuka Oval. While many pundits who watch Geelong thought it was a danger game for the Cats, the loss still comes as a surprise after the emphatic round one win against the Hawks at the MCG. While many pointed to the six day break verses the Giants' eight and other factors, Coach Chris Scott was having none of it, rankled his team had put in a sub-par performance, the efforts of the Giants led by ex-Cats Steve Johnson and Shane Mumford notwithstanding. Mitch Duncan found himself poleaxed by Mumford in the third quarter, a quarter that saw the Giants boot eight goals to the Cats' three to take a commanding four goal lead into the final quarter- the margin at one stage stretched to around six goals before late goals from Josh Caddy and Cory Gregson spared blushes. Duncan would have to be in doubt to play on Sunday at home against the Lions though the seven day break gives him some chance. Whether or not the Cats' brains trust will take the risk when others such as George Horlin-Smith and Dan Menzel are waiting in the wings is another matter. In other news, sadly legendary country footy and 1980s VFL umpire Greg Sidebottom has passed away on the weekend, after suffering an apparent heart attack while umpiring a match between Ardmona and Undera. We were fortunate to have Greg as a client in our day job and are very saddened by his passing. He was always the first to reach for the wallet to pay for the coffees or lunch and very fair in how he did business. GREATER WESTERN
