AFL
2017 ROUND 16: BRISBANE
LIONS V GEELONG CATS
GEELONG has been on the Gold
Coast this week preparing for this Saturday night's match against Brisbane
at the Gabba; most players are there but not Patrick Dangerfield who
reported welcomed his first child, a boy, into the world last night.
Last weekend the injury-depleted Cats drew with GWS at Spotless Stadium;
as expected there is one big inclusion, skipper Joel Selwood, but only
one other change at this stage, youngster Brandan
Parfitt straight back in after one well in the VFL since returning from
a hamstring injury. Other first-choice players such as Dan Menzel, Nakia
Cockatoo and Scott Selwood all miss. Zach Guthrie has retained his spot
as does Hydro's
favourite Wylie Buzza.
But the big news
this weekend is the two hundredth game for defender Tom Lonergan, who
has literally overcome losing a kidney to win an AFL premiership, adjusted
best on ground in a VFL premiership, and became a great advocate for
Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation.
The 33 year old played his first game in 2005, suffered the injury in
round 21 of 2006, and was back playing the next season in the VFL. While
he didn't play an AFL game that season he did help the VFL side to the
premiership that season, named best afield and awarded the Norm Goss
Medal. He was played as a forward in 2008, kicking 36 goals, including
the Grand Final loss to Hawthorn but found his calling as a backman,
playing in the 2011 premiership down back where he has stayed ever since.
It was confirmed
that Darcy Lang has a fracture in a leg bone, which he suffered in the
win over Fremantle two weeks ago. George Horlin-Smith returns via the
VFL where Sam Simpson returns after making his AFL debut, along with
Aaron Black. Scott Selwood, Menzel and Jordan Cunico remain on the sidelines,
not named in any side this week. The VFL side plays Collingwood at home
on Saturday while the VFL Women's team plays the Seaford Tigerettes
on Sunday down Seaford way. The Lions beat Essendon on the weekend in
Melbourne, the shock of the round. They have a shorter injury list but
it includes the likes of Dayne Beams (was up to three weeks with a shoulder
but has been named), Geelong premiership player who I'm still sad is
no longer with the Cats, Allen Christensen (season, shoulder), and Mitch
Robinson (season, foot).

AFL
2016 ROUND 22: BRISBANE LIONS V GEELONG CATS
GEELONG held onto their top four spot with a ten goal win over Brisbane
at the Gabba today, with the Lions putting up a fair bit of fight but
unable to hold off the more experienced Cats. The Cats looked headed
for a potential three-figure margin with a seven goal to one first quarter
but Justin Leppitsch's boys played a good system and it began to click
in the second term, the margin soon back inside twenty points, the Lions
putting in a six goal to two quarter. FULL
