NATHAN ABLETT TO PULL ON CATS' JUMPER IN 2009

By Ben Jensen (Midway between Edinburgh and London) RECENTLY 'RETIRED' GEELONG PREMIERSHIP FORWARD Nathan Ablett has announced he will be pulling on the boots in 2009 for the Cats - albeit the Broadbeach Cats. Little-heard of Broadbeach are a small club on the Gold Coast, playing in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL), battling against the relatively league giants of Southport Sharks and the Brisbane Lions reserve side Suncoast.

Ablett cited the small-town feel of the club as the reason he chose to join the Cats rather than the Sharks or Lions. "I had a look at Southport and had a kick there but I thought it was a bit too big. I sort of wanted to keep it low key, and thought Broadbeach was that sort of a club", he said. His decision to stick with the modest Modawarre Football Club instead of the TAC Cup side Geelong Falcons was in a similar vein.

Should Ablett may feel the urge to have another stab at an AFL career in years to come, the fledgeling GC17 club may be his calling. Intriguingly, should he chose that route he may find himself reunited with fellow Geelong Premiership forward Cameron Mooney. Last season Mooney expressed a desire to move closer to family. With elder brother Jason, who also played with the Cats but more successfully with the Sydney Swans, now residing on the Gold Coast, and partner Seona a Queenslander he may find the lure too good to refuse, admitting as much on an episode of Foxtel's On the Couch earlier this season.
