CATS OUTCLASSED BY CROWS
Ben Jensen 23 July 2017

AFL 2017 ROUND 18: ADELAIDE CROWS V GEELONG CATS GEELONG wiped the floor with Adelaide in their last encounter just seven weeks ago but Friday night the Crows had the better of the Cats in almost the exact opposite outcome. The Crows opened with a five goal to one opening term and pushed ahead again in the second quarter to lead by just under 30 points at half time. When the Cats were again out-scored in the third quarter a Crows victory was inevitable, the two sides going goal for goal for a while but the lead at 37 points for the final break. Adelaide managed to go goal-less in the final quarter, and as Harry Taylor slotted through his third, fourth and fifth goals by the fourteen minute mark it looked like an unlikely comeback was on the cards. But in the final thirteen minutes of the game there would be only one behind each scored, the final margin of 21 points definitely flattering the Cats but they did mount a credible comeback, whatever Chris Scott and his players came up with worked. Despite the loss by Sunday evening the Cats remained second on the ladder thanks largely to Richmond defeating GWS today.

Worse news was to come on the weekend with Mark Blicavs' ankle injury turning out to be a suspected crack in his lower right leg, with him certain to miss weeks. One of the reasons why the likes of Rhys Stanley and Steven Motlop haven't found themselves in the Magoos (VFL) has been the injury list: the VFL side went down to Sandringham at home by 27 points with only a few AFL-listed players featuring in the best. Nakia Cockatoo remains on the sidelines while Wylie Buzza was given a week off unofficially 'managed', and sadly Brandan Parfitt's hamstring is keeping him out of football yet again. Next weekend the Cats play Carlton in an away game at Etihad, followed by two games at Geelong against Sydney and Richmond. The final away match of the season is against Nathan Buckley's Magpies at the MCG, and the final match will be against GWS at Geelong on a day yet to be determined but it won't be on a Monday night.
