RICCARDI RE-SIGNS, BUT CATS MAKE CUTS TO LIST
Mark Heenan October 24 2003

GEELONG has Re-Signed veteran Peter Riccardi after the 30 year-old agreed to a new contract, The Cattery's Mark Heenan reports. It caps off an amazing week for the Cats utility who was married last weekend.

Since making his debut as a 19 year-old in 1992, Riccardi has played 241 games for Geelong, played in three losing AFL grand finals (1992, 1994-95), won the club’s best and fairest in 1998 and represented Victoria in State of Origin on two occasions.

Riccardi believes he can play for another two years and is relishing the chance to play finals with the Cats young talented group of midfielders.

" I just want to see if I can help the club and get into finals. That's what we're all playing for, just to help the club be successful. '' Riccardi told the Geelong Advertiser.

Meanwhile the Cats have delisted five senior players and two rookies from it’s list. Aaron Lord, Mitchell White and Marc Woolnough all have retired but former Demon Brent Grgic and Ben Finnin were given their marching orders.

Grgic, who spent his junior days with local GDFL club Bell Post Hill, made his debut with Melbourne in 1997 after being drafted from the Geelong Falcons. The 24 year-old played 77 games for Melbourne and was a member of the Dees 2000 Grand final team.

Grgic came to Geelong from Melbourne in 2002, after the Cats gave up their 55th pick in the 2001 National draft. Grgic, played 13 senior games in his two seasons with Geelong.

Finnin, originally drafted from Adelaide, came to Geelong this season but was unable to make a senior appearance.

Rookies Andrew Carazzo and Travis Jorgensen were also released. Carrazzo who has spent the last two seasons on the rookie list, won the Cats 2003 Reserves Best & Fairest. The 19 year-old unluckily missed out on playing in Geelong’s 2002 VFL premiership side after sustaining an injury during the finals campaign.

Brent Grgic, left, is gone but Peter Riccardi, centre, is here for another year or two.
