HISTORY DOESN'T REPEAT AT GABBA FOR
CATS AFL 2014 ROUND 2 BRISBANE LIONS V GEELONG CATS GEELONG defeated the Brisbane Lions by 25 points at the Gabba this afternoon in Andrew Mackie's 200th match. Steve Johnson, himself in his 13th season was clearly best on ground while last week's milestone man Jimmy Bartel wasn't too far behind in game number 251. GEELONG led Brisbane at half time despite being outplayed for much of the half, three goals in barely sixty seconds by Hawkins, Hunt and Varcoe towards half time giving the Cats the lead. There was plenty of rain at the Gabba leading up to the game, the conditions quite slippery and tough for player and fan alike in the first half but drying out thereafter. It was an equal spread of goal kickers for the Cats with five players booting two apiece; Tom Hawkins, Travis Varcoe, Bartel, George Horlin-Smith and Jordan Murdoch. The leading goal kicker for the day was Lion Daniel Mayes with four, next best for the Lions veteran Jonathan Brown with two. Horlin-Smith came in as a late change for Jared Rivers, and started as sub. He came on in the second half for Corey Enright who suffered what may prove to be a nasty leg injury, having his legs taken out from under him. Fortunately there was no come-back from the Lions like we saw in the corresponding fixture last season, the Lions then booting ten of the final eleven goals of the match to steal it at the death thanks to heroics from Ashley McGrath.
GEELONG:
