In front of 23,563 fans, Geelong's young guns James Bartel, Gary Ablett, Jarad Rooke and Paul Chambers tore the Saints apart to run out 26.10 (166) to 6.8 (44) winners.

The day also heralded the most public appearance of former champion Cats' goalkicker Gary Ablett.

Watching his son's fourth AFL game, Ablett was mobbed by fans - still revering their idol - as he sat in the RJ Hickey Stand and walked the stadium's surrounds at half time on his way to the locker room.

He was most pleased with his son's two-goal performance - Gary junior's best by far to date.

``Gary was rapt,'' Ablett's manager, Michael Baker, said of his 13 possessions and two marks.

``Gary (senior) was very happy with the way young Gary went today and the game itself for Geelong.''

Bartel impressed in front of his home crowd fans collecting 21 touches, including eight by quarter-time.

The experienced know-how of Peter Riccardi (five goals) and Aaron Lord (six) also had Skilled Stadium shaking with cheers as the Cats climbed to sixth on the AFL ladder.

Cats' coach Mark Thompson said it was too early to reassess Geelong's goals after being written off at the start of the season.

``We've just got to concentrate on (Fremantle) next week,'' he said.

``I know the players are pretty close and they're a good young group of people who are working for each other and they'll continue to do that. I think the old boys like watching the young guys come in, they want to help them, it's a real team with people developing other people.''

Meanwhile, Baker last night moved to quash media reports Ablett senior was to play in the Legends Game later this season.

Ablett had the bone affected by a tumor in his left wrist replaced by a graft from his leg late last year. Baker says he is in no state to play again.

When asked about seeing Ablett on the field again, Baker said: ``I don't think so. I would love him to play in the Legends but I know his situation. I am not going to pressure him when in actual fact I know he can't play football again.''
