The Cats recovered from a slow start and kicked 11 goals during a sensational second quarter to enjoy a clear lead over the Devils at the main break.

Geelong widened the gap to 60 points by three-quarter time and held off a final term fightback from Tasmania to eventually prevail 15.16 (106) to 10.7 (67).

Cats coach Ron Watt said he was very pleased with the win, particularly his side's ``outstanding'' second term.

``If we could perform to that level all of the time we would be fairly happy,'' Watt said.

``Our boys just attacked the ball with huge intensity.

``Their use of the ball was terrific and put Tasmania under a lot of pressure.

``I was very pleased with most parts of the game, there's just a few little bits and pieces we need to work on.''

Tim McGrath was named Geelong's best on ground for his solid efforts in defence.

Will Slade also worked hard in the Cats' backline before being moved into the forward 50 where he was similarly impressive.

Adam Chatfield proved handy in the midfield for Geelong while Brent Grgic and Josh Hunt provided valuable onball support.

David Mensch, who had a successful stint in defence during the third quarter, was the Cats' top goalkicker for the day with three majors.

Geelong continues to sit one game clear on top of the VFL ladder ahead of Werribee in second place.

Watt said he was pleased with how the season was progressing.

``We're in a very good position at the moment,'' Watt said.

``It's all looking well for where we want to head later in the year but we've still got a month to go so we'll wait and see.''

The Cats meet the Murray Kangaroos at Skilled Stadium from 10.50am on Saturday in a curtain raiser to the AFL round 18 match.
