Gannon, a former opening batsman for the club, was appointed to the position last week. He takes over from Barry McFarlane who has stepped down to concentrate on his role as Geelong Cricket Association grounds chairman.

Gannon first played with St Joseph's in 1965 as a junior and was part of the club's 1974-75 premiership side.

He stayed at St Joseph's until the early 1980s when he was forced to retire as a result of his growing role at the Geelong Football Club, where he was chief executive from 1987-91.

Gannon has retained close ties with the club over the years with his 18-year-old son Ryan playing his first year in the St Joseph's seniors last season.

``I've been up watching him and and been around the club for the last couple of years,'' Gannon said.

``I've got a lot out of them so I thought it was time to make more of a contribution.''

Gannon said he was keen to begin his new role.

``There seems to be really good feeling around the club so I'm really looking forward to it,'' he said.

``St Joseph's is only a relatively young club and has a lot of good juniors.

``And I'm hoping I can make a worthwhile contribution to the people that helped me out when I was playing.

``It will be more like relaxation than a job.''

Meanwhile, Highton stalwart Gary Jamieson will step down from his role as club president on Sunday.

Jamieson, who has held the position at Highton for the past 17 years, will be replaced by Craig Golding.
