THEY didn't have quite the same natural ability they show on a football field but after a bit of hard work and some preservation, Geelong Football Club players got the hang of rock climbing too.

The team headed to the Rock Adventure Centre in Newtown where players and even coach Mark Thompson undertook a climbing class, as part of the club's recent introducing new training methods.

``It's something different just to get away from the club,'' defender Brad Sholl said. ``The last few weeks we've been doing different things, we played tennis and then we went to Melbourne.

``We start training in October and we spend so much time at the club, it's good to break it up.''

Climbing instructor and centre owner Rick Lince said a number of rock climbing requirements could also be applied to football.

``It's a huge team building exercise, it requires trust and it establishes responsibility when holding the ropes'' he said.

While he eventually got the hang of it, Sholl said it wasn't the easy training run he thought it was going to be. ``It's good fun, but it's tough,'' he said.

``I'm not a rock climber, I think I'll stick to footy.''
