CATS PASS THE TEST AGAINST GIANTS; MITCH CLARK COMEBACK ON TRACK
Ben Jensen 5 June 2016

AFL ROUND 11 2016: GEELONG CATS V GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS GEELONG were challenged all game by Greater Western Sydney but the Cats had the better of the Giants with a superior second half, despite another week of pretty woeful goalkicking. The sides were equal on goals at the end but the Cats' additional ten behinds won out on the day. Giant Lachie Whitfield kicked a goal after the siren to peg the final margin back to 10 points.

It was an interesting game with Joel Selwood very quiet in the first half and Patrick Dangerfield unobtrusive though he had around 20 possessions by half-time. Cameron Guthrie was the Cats' best up until the main break. The second half though saw Selwood really step up a couple gears, and he went up another couple in the final term. Dangerfield and Guthrie continued their efforts while Dan Menzel and Tom Hawkins kicked clutch goals when it really counted.

Jimmy Bartel was again all class and without him in the back half the Cats may have found themselves a few goals down at half time. Harry Taylor absolutely blanked Giant Jeremy Cameron who'd been on fire in previous weeks kicking 22 goals from his seven games thus far. He ended up with nine touches and no goals for the day. Veterans Tom Lonergan, Corey Enright and Andrew Mackie did well down back though were eclipsed certainly by Lachie Henderson and to a lesser extent Jake Kolodjashnij.

Unlike round 2 when the Cats copped a hiding from the Giants including in the ruck, Zac Smith and Mark Blicavs held their own against Shane Mumford and Rory Lobb, Smith putting in one of his best performances yet in the blue and white hoops. Overall the Giants had more hitouts but it may no impact on the game. Interestingly Selwood, Dangerfield and Josh Caddy were each credited with a hitout, Smith in the contest but the umpire at one point was throwing up the ball quite low, the ruckmen getting their timing wrong.

The Cats still have plenty of work to do but winners are certainly grinners, they'll have to be more accurate in front of goal though if they are to win the battle of the Scott brothers next Saturday night. Geelong host the North Melbourne Kangaroos at Etihad Stadium, the match starting at 7:25PM, to be broadcast on Channel Seven and Fox Footy.

In the VFL today Geelong may have lost to Sandringham at Simonds Stadium, but all eyes were on Mitch Clark who was playing his first match of the season after being kept out of footy for around a year with a very persistent calf injury. Sam Menegola did play in the AFL NAB Challenge but injured himself in the match against Collingwood, today was his first game of the season proper. For good measure Menegola was named in the best players

The little bloke and I headed down for a look in the second quarter, and saw all of Clark's goals. He was a class above the other players on the field, far too strong when going for an overhead mark on the lead or in a small pack. Nathan Vardy flew for a couple as well but struggled to hold on to the mark. Surely one of these two will be recalled into the AFL squad side or later, especially if Rhys Stanley misses more matches. VFL SCORES.
