CATS LOSE OUT TO MAGPIES By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery GEELONG were all but belted by Collingwood at the MCG last night, trailing by just under ten goals late in the third quarter before the Cats doubled their goal tally to finish 31 points behind at the final siren despite having four more scoring shots. The eight goal to two first quarter won it for the Magpies, their next two quarters fairly impressive but the heavy lifting was certainly done early on. One positive from the day was the VFL side beat Collingwood by 36 points at Victoria Park. Jackson Sheringham and Josh Walker acquainted themselves quite well in their first games, Sheringham kicking a goal in the last quarter after coming on for Matthew Stokes in the third quarter as the substitute. There were some victories for individuals. Tom Lonergan completely outplayed Travis Cloke and Tom Hawkins did likewise to his opponent but could only kick one goal four behinds. Experienced duo Paul Chapman and Stokes were quite disappointing though they weren't alone. A number of umpiring decisions didn't appear to go Geelong's way on the night but mostly in the second half. One of the more contentious decisions was the non-goal to skipper Joel Selwood. The soccered goal would have been his second in a few minutes but instead was referred to the video reviewer. From my seat on level 4 on a good angle it looked pretty clear Selwood kicked it but after a number of minutes the umpire's original hunch that it was actually booted by Heath Shaw that stood, to a chorus of boos. This robbed the Cats of their momentum to a degree though Chapman did kick his only goal four minutes later. Another dud was a deliberate out of bounds decision paid against Chapman who booted the ball fifty metres from defence, the ball eventually spilled out of bounds on the wing on the Cats' side of the ground yet inexplicably a free kick was paid to the Magpies.
