AFL ROUND 16 2012;
GEELONG V COLLINGWOOD; MATCH PREVIEW By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery GEELONG V COLLINGWOOD CATS GEELONG has rolled the dice and named two new players for tonight's clash with Collingwood at the MCG. Jackson Sheringham and Josh Walker, both products of the local systems, have impressed in the VFL this season and get their chance with Walker named at full forward. Also among the ins are Steve Johnson, Harry Taylor and Mitch Duncan while the Cats lose Jimmy Bartel to a two match suspension, David Wojcinski to a hamstring injury, with Dawson Simpson, Mitch Brown and Jordan Murdoch omitted. For the Magpies the very unlucky or hard done by Sharrod Wellingham is out suspended along with Jackson Paine and Marley Williams. Their replacements are the more than adequate Scott Pendlebury, Nathan Brown and Chris Tarrant. Walker, who of course is the Grandson of 1963 Premiership player Peter Walker, and was picked up in the 2010 Rookie Draft from the Geelong Falcons. 1965 Carji Greeves medallist Walker Senior passed away in 2010. His promotion comes at a good time coming off a bag of five goals against Box Hill last week, for a total of 20 goals this season. Similarly Sheringham also came via the Rookie Draft though with a different pathway. He played at VFL level for Werribee in 2007 and 2008 after missing out in the AFL drafts. He shifted to the Geelong VFL side from season 2009, joining from Werribee at the same time as James Podsiadly, playing nine games. While still on the VFL list for the Cats he played mostly for GFL side Bell Park in 2010. He was picked up in last season's Rookie Draft after another season of VFL/GFL action including a Premiership with the Dragons and 11 VFL games. The two newbies make a total of 10 debutantes for the season, with another six matches to go, the most since 1980. Hopefully the season pans out differently. Also on today is a VFL match between the two sides, at Collingwood's erstwhile home Victoria Park.

ROUND 8, FRIDAY 18 MAY 2012 19:50 AEST; MCG CATS SUFFER FOURTH LOSS By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES V GEELONG CATS GEELONG nearly stole back the match but lost it at the death to Collingwood at the MCG last night. The Cats trailed by four goals early in the final term but despite scoring a barrage of behinds, managed to level the scores with one minute and forty-odd seconds to go. They appeared set to at least go on to snatch the lead outright but a 50m penalty given away by Josh Hunt on Alex Fasolo saw the Magpies go back to a six point lead with a minute to go. A final roll of the dice by the Cats didn't pay off, Scott Pendlebury kicking a long goal to a vacant goalsquare to seal the win. The Cats will rue their missed opportunities for the next week and possibly beyond, while the 50m penalty itself was debated long and wide following the match. It was probably there but you often see them waived on. Before the bounce Matthew Scarlett again pulled out injury, this time after rolling an ankle after passing a fitness test for a hip injury that kept him out of last week's loss to Adelaide.
