AFL 2016 ROUND 16: GEELONG CATS V
SYDNEY SWANS; MATCH PREVIEW & TEAMS AFL 2016 ROUND 16: GEELONG CATS V SYDNEY SWANS GEELONG return from their bye with a home match on a Friday night against Sydney tonight, welcoming back Mitch Clark who has been out of AFL-level footy for well over a year. Clark returns along with Darcy Lang and Nakia Cockatoo while making way are omitted trio Rhys Stanley, Cory Gregson and who we think is most unlucky given the match-winning roles he's played lately, Shane Kersten. Stanley has been pretty good too though not great and seems the secondary ruck option after Zac Smith; Clark taking his spot. Cockatoo has missed 6-7 weeks with a knee injury and seems to be replacing Kersten though there is a fair old height difference. Lang was dropped after round 12 and comes in for Gregson. In important news for punters who park at the ground, there is no parking on the grass within the Kardinia Park precinct as a consequence of much-needed rain in the last week or so (you should see our building site!)- so best to get there a good 15 minutes earlier than you normally do. But for those with parking passes who normally park in the gravel or bitumen areas (ala Hooker Renfrey) you're OK they'll still let you in. You'd better rug up, the last few home games have been quite warm but tonight I expect it to be quite Antarctic-like and if you're in the open you may cop some rain. Sydney made four changes, all of them voluntary, to their side that narrowly lost to the Western Bulldogs last weekend. In the news for all the wrong reasons this week was Kieren Jack with a family dispute somehow becoming news; we'll say no more. Last season the Cats had the better of the Swans in a game all eyes were on, again for non-footy reasons as Adam Goodes made his return after the booing controversy. Geelong won by 32 points in the end after a tight first three quarters. Tom Hawkins booted four goals that night and fresh from buying a new farm and the news he's going to become a dad would be excited to get back in front of his home crowd under lights. For the weather check here. In the VFL the Cats play Carlton affiliate Northern Blues on Saturday at IKON Park (e.g. Princess Park). The Blues are a game behind the seventh placed Cats in twelfth position so a win by the Cats gives them a handy buffer and would cement a place in the eight for now.
UMPIRES FIELD:
Brendan Hosking, Simon Meredith, Shane McInerney EM: Shane Stewart TIP: Cats by 32 points

on to your hats we're retrieving the news now...

AFL 2015 ROUND 19 GEELONG CATS V SYDNEY SWANS SATURDAY 8 AUGUST 2015 19:20 AEST SIMONDS STADIUM CATS BEAT SWANS IN JOEL SELWOOD'S
200TH WITH SPOTLIGHT ON ADAM GOODES AFL ROUND 19 2015: GEELONG CATS V SYDNEY SWANS GEELONG made sure skipper Joel Selwood's 200th game was a happy one, defeating Sydney by 32 points despite being behind by as much as two goals in the first and second quarters. Prior to the game fireworks lit up the sky a few minutes before the bounce as the crowd of 27,910 streamed into the ground to see Selwood's milestone and the eyes of the wider AFL and political world were on Adam Goodes as he returned to the field following the 'booing' saga. Goodes certainly had the goods early on the night kicking a first quarter goal, though his young opponent Jake Kolodjashnij in just his fifth game took the overall honours. He was greeted mostly positively by the crowd though a few faint jeers were heard at times. It was particularly pleasing to see how good Kolodjashnij and fellow young defenders such as Jackson Thurlow handled themselves. 8 AUGUST 2015 MATCH REPORT - CATS BEAT SWANS IN JOEL SELWOOD'S 200TH WITH SPOTLIGHT ON ADAM GOODES 8 AUGUST 2015 AFL 2015 ROUND 19: GEELONG CATS V SYDNEY SWANS MATCH PREVIEW GEELONG:
