2017 ROUND 6: GEELONG CATS V COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES
JED BEWS and Sam Menegola return to the Geelong line up to play Collingwood
this Sunday afternoon at the MCG. They come in at the expense of Dan
Menzel, who has been rested/managed, and Jackson Thurlow, omitted. Collingwood
has also dropped a Jackson in Ramsay, managed Ben Reid and brought in
Josh Smith and Lynden Dunn - the latter to play his first game for the
Magpies since crossing from Melbourne in the pre-season. The
round six figure is just under ten years after the Cats kicked
the highest score of the century over Richmond. The Cats play a
struggling Magpies side whose coach, poor old Nathan 'Bucks' Buckley,
appears in all sorts of strife - at least from the outside, everything
may well be fine and he has the full support of the Board, etc.
Geelong
initially made just one change managing Dan Menzel with four brought
in to the squad of 25 - usual suspects Rhys Stanley, Jed Bews, Tom Ruggles,
and Sam Menegola returning from suspension. Bews must have had enough
of being called into the side on the seven man interchange only to be
named an emergency; Stanley too - Bews gets his chance now and will
hopefully take the proverbial bull by the horns. Last
year of course the Magpies gave the Cats a
shock, winning by four goals, similar to how St Kilda and Carlton
did - last week they erased that memory over the Saints so will be hoping
to do the same against the Magpies. Josh Cowan (achilles soreness) remains
on the injury list and was not named in the VFL nor AFL sides, and neither
was Lincoln McCarthy (groin). The VFL side play Casey Scorpions at home
on Saturday at 1PM, entry free for members.

ROUND 9 2016: COLLINGWOOD
MAGPIES V GEELONG CATS
WHILE MANY GEELONG
observers including ourselves thought this a danger game not many would
have tipped Collingwood to do the job on us. But fix us up Nathan Buckley's
boys did, breaking the Cats' six game winning streak with a 24 point
win. A seven goal to none first quarter by the Magpies was too much
for the Cats to recover from, although winning the next three quarters
it was too little, too late with the Magpies winning by 24 points, while
kicking five additional goals. Briefly in the final term it appeared
as though the Cats were about to run over the Magpies after booting
the opening two to make four consecutive goals to make the margin just
9 points, but the Magpies then went on their own run, three unanswered
goals putting the match beyond doubt.
While Collingwood
certainly played a great team game, finally doing coach Nathan Buckley
proud, the match stats told a pretty sorry tale of missed opportunity
by Geelong. Costly misses of relatively simply shots for goal from the
likes of Patrick Dangerfield and even Jimmy Bartel heaped the pressure
on the Cats heading into half time, trailing by 32 points while having
three goals and four behinds for the term to Collingwood's two straight
goals. Despite wins by Greater Western Sydney and the Sydney Swans the
Cats remain in second spot on the AFL
ladder, ahead of GWS (just) and the Swans on percentage. In brighter
news today the VFL side had another win down at Frankston by six goals
squaring their le. The VFL Cats have a bye next week.
