AFL 2017 ROUND 8:
ESSENDON BOMBERS
V GEELONG CATS; MATCH PREVIEW
& TEAMS AFL 2017 ROUND 8: ESSENDON BOMBERS V GEELONG CATS PLENTY OF NEWS TODAY, GEELONG SELECTORS have swung the proverbial axe ahead of this Saturday night's 'Powerco Country Game', when triple Geelong premiership player James Kelly will play his 300th game, for the Bombers. The Cats dropped four players and one to injury, while Rookie Mark O'Connor from County Kerry in Ireland is a shock inclusion, elevated off the Rookie list this afternoon. Lachie Henderson, who missed with injury last weekend as a late change, is out with a chest injury while Aaron Black, Jackson Thurlow, Jordan Murdoch and Darcy Lang have been omitted. Joining O'Connor as inclusions are defenders Tom Stewart and Jake Kolodjashnij, ruckman Zac Smith, and Sam Menegola. Kolodjashnij's return for his first game of the season is welcomed while Stewart, Smith and Menegola essentially had a week off - Smith somewhat of a surprise given he and Rhys Stanley who retained his position have alternated so far this season. O'Connor was elevated from the Rookie List at the expense of Lincoln McCarthy who faces up to 8 weeks on the sidelines with a persistant groin injury for which he has now had surgery; today's announcement he was moving on to the long term injury list was expected. McCarthy played 19 games in 2016 after playing just 5 between 2012 & 2014, missing all of 2013. He played the first three rounds this season before picking up an injury against Melbourne, a game in which he kicked one goal and had 16 disposals. O'Connor joined the club this season and has played all four VFL games so far, clearly impressing enough to beat AFL-listed players to break into the side. The 20 year old has been named at half forward, more or less Darcy Lang (or McCarthy)'s position. Essendon has dropped three players including Brent Stanton, and named James Stewart for his Essendon debut, the former GWS player having played 18 games in the last four seasons. Jobe Watson is their other handy inclusion. These two sides meet in the VFL at Windy Hill Saturday afternoon (team lists below) while the VFL Women's side plays Seaford at Ocean Grove's Shell Reserve at 1PM- team lists are below. Check out our VFL and Geelong VFL Women's team micro-sites, which compliments the existing VFL micro-site.

AFL 2016 ROUND 20 GEELONG CATS V ESSENDON BOMBERS SUNDAY 7 AUGUST 2016 15:20 AEST ETIHAD STADIUM 7 AUGUST 2016 CATS GET THE FOUR POINTS AGAINST THE BOMBERS 5 AUGUST AFL 2016 ROUND 20: GEELONG CATS V ESSENDON BOMBERS; MATCH PREVIEW & TEAMS CATS
GET THE FOUR POINTS AGAINST THE BOMBERS AFL ROUND 20 2016: GEELONG CATS V ESSENDON BOMBERS WE expected it to be a dour affair and it was; in a pretty forgettable game of football the Cats defeated the hapless Bombers but in pretty pedestrian style with the depleted Bombers just wanting the season to end no doubt. The game was significant with Scott Selwood playing a handy first game for the club and Josh Caddy playing his first game in well over a month. Harry Taylor, named best on ground for the Cats, was absolutely cannoned into by Joe Daniher late in the game while standing a few metres in front of Tom Lonergan who suffered a similar ten years ago, but was fine after the game. Daniel Menzel missed more than half the game with hamstring tightness. A number of other Cats were left with question marks over whether they're in the best 22; Mitch Duncan and Mark Blicavs among them. But the Cats' hopes of a top four finish remain relatively healthy with current top four sides to play each other while the Cats' final three games are against Richmond, Brisbane and Melbourne.
