AFL 2013 ROUND 8; COLLINGWOOD
V GEELONG; MATCH PREVIEW By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES V GEELONG CATS JOSH HUNT is back for Geelong in his first AFL game of the season Saturday night at the MCG, taking the place of injured Taylor Hunt who has a fractured shoulder. Also in for the Cats is veteran Joel Corey, who steps in for the suspended James Kelly. Four changes for the Magpies, Luke Ball returning for his first match in a season from a knee reconstruction. Missing for the Pies are suspended Heath Shaw, injured duo Dale Thomas and Martin Clarke while Caolan Mooney was dropped. In the VFL the two sides face off earlier in the day at Victoria Park. James Kelly was suspended for two matches for rough conduct against Bomber Brendan Goddard. Youngsters Jordan Schroder and Jackson Thurlow retain their spots in the side. The Pies would have hoped to have Alex Fasolo back this week but his suspension from a VFL match put paid to that. While the Cats are missing Paul Chapman, Travis Varcoe and Taylor Hunt from their best 22 the Pies are faring much worse injury wise with no less than ten players unavailable due to injury.
GEELONG and Collingwood games are always a cracker, even if one side wins by nearly 100 points. Last season the Wobblers got the better of the Cats. I remember the night well as that week I was getting the only bathroom renovated. Wife and month old baby relocated to Geelong for the week while I toughed it out without a shower - had to use the gym instead. Rocked up (read full match details) just before the bounce to watch with the younger brother who got the train from Geelong, in the knowledge the bloke doing the reno for me, who equally only just made it in time, was there in the Members supporting the unwashed. He wasn't too gleeful about it though, like John Harms on the night, reckons the Pies were just lucky the Cats started off so poorly or they'd have probably gotten done at the death. 2011 was a much better season for the Cats of course, beating the Magpies not twice but THREE times. First up winning by three points in round 8, before absolutely belting the Wobblers by a lazy 96 points on a Saturday night. And who could forget the biggest win of all, the Cats winning their third premiership in three seasons by 38 points in the grand final. UMPIRES FIELD:

AFL 2012, ROUND 17, ETIHAD STADIUM MATCH REPORT CATS LOSE OUT TO MAGPIES MATCH PREVIEW AFL ROUND 16 2012; GEELONG V COLLINGWOOD CATS LOSE OUT TO MAGPIES By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery GEELONG were all but belted by Collingwood at the MCG last night, trailing by just under ten goals late in the third quarter before the Cats doubled their goal tally to finish 31 points behind at the final siren despite having four more scoring shots. The eight goal to two first quarter won it for the Magpies, their next two quarters fairly impressive but the heavy lifting was certainly done early on. One positive from the day was the VFL side beat Collingwood by 36 points at Victoria Park. Jackson Sheringham and Josh Walker acquainted themselves quite well in their first games, Sheringham kicking a goal in the last quarter after coming on for Matthew Stokes in the third quarter as the substitute. There were some victories for individuals. Tom Lonergan completely outplayed Travis Cloke and Tom Hawkins did likewise to his opponent but could only kick one goal four behinds. Experienced duo Paul Chapman and Stokes were quite disappointing though they weren't alone. A number of umpiring decisions didn't appear to go Geelong's way on the night but mostly in the second half. One of the more contentious decisions was the non-goal to skipper Joel Selwood. The soccered goal would have been his second in a few minutes but instead was referred to the video reviewer. From my seat on level 4 on a good angle it looked pretty clear Selwood kicked it but after a number of minutes the umpire's original hunch that it was actually booted by Heath Shaw that stood, to a chorus of boos. This robbed the Cats of their momentum to a degree though Chapman did kick his only goal four minutes later. Another dud was a deliberate out of bounds decision paid against Chapman who booted the ball fifty metres from defence, the ball eventually spilled out of bounds on the wing on the Cats' side of the ground yet inexplicably a free kick was paid to the Magpies.
