AFL 2017 ROUND 15:
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS; MATCH PREVIEW & TEAMS AFL 2017 ROUND 15: GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS AT LEAST ONE player will make his AFL debut for the Cats this Saturday night against the GWS Giants at Spotless Stadium, with Zach Guthrie named in the side. There may well be one other with skipper Joel Selwood a serious chance to miss following Sunday's KO at Simonds Stadium- none of the three emergencies have played a game at AFL level before. Four compulsory changes were made by the Cats, the most significant among them defender Tom Stewart who is set to miss six weeks with a fractured eye socket, also suffered on Sunday. Scott Selwood has finally succumbed to a hamstring injury while Darcy Lang (leg) and George Horlin-Smith (ankle) complete the outs for the Cats. Coming into the side is gun defender Lachie Henderson, Guthrie (brother of Cameron), relatively untried forward Aaron Black and ruckman Zac Smith who was dropped for last week; the Cats are going in very tall. The Giants have made three changes of their own with two due to injury (Tim Taranto and Harrison Himmelberg), and have dropped Daniel Lloyd. Returning is a handy player in Josh Kelly along with Rory 'Topspin' Lobb and Devon Smith. Lobb worked well with Shane Mumford for the Giants in last season's clash in the ACT so the Cats' decision to go a bit taller may be a good move. All of a sudden the Cats have just about the longest injury list in the league, no fewer than fifteen featuring on it- albeit two of those Henderson and Smith are named to return. Only one player with AFL experience has returned to the VFL side this week, Brendan Parfitt, who also comes off the injury list, which sees Irishman Mark O'Connor return to the Rookie List. Emergencies for the Cats are Timm House, Sam Simpson (son of Sean) and, wait for it, Wylie Buzza, who is SURELY close to getting a game now but with the tall timber already named in Black and Smith it's hard to see it happening now unfortunately. Guthrie has been elevated from the Rookie List while Black and the rest are regular listed players. The VFL side play at home to Coburg at 1PM on Saturday, so should any of the three emergencies not be seen at this match you can bet Selwood or someone else will go out of the AFL side. The VFL Women's team plays at Deakin Uni on Sunday against St Kilda. In other news tonight the AFL's Appeals Tribunal (or similar) increased the penalty handed out the Richmond's Bachar Houli from the two weeks originally handed down to four. The whole thing became a bit of a circus when on Tuesday night the Richmond team tabled character references from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull (who may have given the comments for another purpose), and TV funnyman Waleed Aly. The AFL appealed the original decision, the first time they have ever done so, and tonight that appeal was upheld. FINALLY a very happy birthday today to Cat fan Darren Gilmore.

PASS THE TEST AGAINST GIANTS; MITCH CLARK COMEBACK ON TRACK AFL ROUND 11 2016: GEELONG CATS V GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS GEELONG were challenged all game by Greater Western Sydney but the Cats had the better of the Giants with a superior second half, despite another week of pretty woeful goalkicking. The sides were equal on goals at the end but the Cats' additional ten behinds won out on the day. Giant Lachie Whitfield kicked a goal after the siren to peg the final margin back to 10 points. It was an interesting game with Joel Selwood very quiet in the first half and Patrick Dangerfield unobtrusive though he had around 20 possessions by half-time. Cameron Guthrie was the Cats' best up until the main break. The second half though saw Selwood really step up a couple gears, and he went up another couple in the final term. Dangerfield and Guthrie continued their efforts while Dan Menzel and Tom Hawkins kicked clutch goals when it really counted. FULL MATCH REPORT GEELONG:
